Facilitating with Psychological Type
find out what self-discovery and self-leadership can do for you
The theory of psychological type along with other frameworks can be a powerful tool, in skilled hands. Many people find the theory of 16 types speaks to them in a deep way; old concerns disappear and new horizons open up.
Students, professionals, and trainers...
- Are you ready to further develop your potential?
- Frameworks such as Temperament, Howard Gardener's Multiple Intelligences, NLP, Social Styles, and the 16 types (often known by the MBTI®) are powerful tools to accelerate effectiveness and improve understanding of self and others.
- What is it worth to you, to fulfill your aspirations?
- Don't just ask for results. You deserve new kinds of results!
When we know who we are, we are freer to be who we are not. - Linda V. Berens
Services:
- self-discovery: who am I, who are you
- self-leadership: work, school, relationships, life
- project facilitation: maximize creative effectiveness
- growing together: group experiential learning
Every path is unique.
I have worked with psychological type since 1992 with therapist Linda V. Berens, a leading theorist, facilitator and author who trained under David Keirsey (coauthor of Please Understand Me). I am based at the University of California at Los Angeles and offer practical expertise with type as well as theoretic knowledge.
Tremendous learning and growth can occur when we experience and practice the use of new knowledge and share with others. This may include journaling, 360 feedback, group experiential learning, cognitive exercises, observational fieldwork, role-modeling, interviewing and type-watching techniques, and other ways to hone "people technology" skills. The responses I have received over the years from my students are among the most rewarding aspects of my life. Psychological type is very relevant to the larger systems we participate in - family, relationships, organizations, culture.
So if you are interested, why just read books or rely on second-hand knowledge? Let's dive in and work together to explore and understand type within the context of your needs, values and talents.
We are a part of, and simultaneously apart from, many larger systems.

Improving Tool Use:
Which tools do you want to learn more about? What if you could more effectively use two or three tools together? Imagine a hiker navigating the woods. How does she find her way: A map? A compass or GPS locator? A keen eye for landmarks and stars? All 3 of these tools are needed for the hiker to "triangulate" her location. In the same way, a good facilitator or coach uses multiple tools to triangulate where a client is and where a client can be next. Tool use is often in the background and is drawn forth as needed. Here are some tools I can assist you with:
- Temperament theory (meet core needs and values)
- Howard Gardener's Multiple Intelligences (develop practical skills)
- the 16 types / MBTI (pin-point or synergize qualities unique to your type)
- Jung's Cognitive Processes (locate links to effective communication, learning and problem solving)
- Neuro-linguistic programming (fine-tune acuity, flexibility and outcomes)
- Social Styles (improve non-verbals and interpersonal process)
- Emotional Intelligence (self with others)
- insights into Human development (core attitudes and beliefs)
There are great traditions for navigating life's pathes, for we are all human.
Availability:
Within Los Angeles, we can most easily arrange for a meeting in Westwood, West Hollywood or Hollywood. A typical process might include needs assessment, self-discovery, take home assignments, guided practice with feedback, and/or creating an action plan. A group process may include group simulations and other learning activities to grow together. Your learning style is important. The result can be step-by-step methods toward practical needs. The tools are most powerful, however, when you learn core principles to apply across differing situations.
